Working Together to Keep Shawanaga Strong
At Shawanaga First Nation, we’re committed to maintaining the core infrastructure that helps our community thrive. From clean water delivery to reliable roads and public safety, our team works hard to support the day-to-day needs of our members.
Public Works Department
Our Public Works team oversees the care and maintenance of many key buildings and spaces in the community, including:
The Band Office
Health Centre
Recreation Centre
Gas Bar
Fire Hall
Retail Stores
They also take care of seasonal and year-round responsibilities such as:
Road maintenance and snow plowing
Grass cutting and general upkeep around public buildings
Managing the community waterfront landing
Helping reduce flooding from beaver dams
Coordinating water delivery by truck to homes
Electricity & Heating
Hydro One provides electricity throughout Shawanaga. Recent infrastructure improvements, such as updated hydro poles and enhanced electrical conductors, have helped improve service reliability.
Most homes in the community are heated with electric heat. Some also use woodstoves or oil. Our elementary school is equipped with solar panels that provide supplementary power and promote energy efficiency.
Water & Wastewater Services
Water is delivered to homes by truck, and our team is dedicated to ensuring safe and consistent access for all residents. Homes are equipped with septic tanks, as there is no central wastewater treatment facility on reserve at this time.
Internet Connectivity
Internet is available in Shawanaga, but speeds and reliability remain limited. Most households still rely on dial-up connections with minimal bandwidth. A K-NET internet tower currently supplies high-speed internet to three public buildings—the Administration Office, Healing Centre, and School—but this service is not yet available throughout the community.
We continue to explore ways to expand access and improve internet service for everyone.
Community Safety
Police services are provided by Anishinabek Police Services (APS), who serve Shawanaga along with our neighbouring communities of Magnetawan and Wasauksing.
